How did life come into being?
(Continued from I believe in the existence of an almighty higher power)
The thing about life is that, as much as we know about what is needed to sustain it, we haven’t got a clue as to what led to the quantum leap from inanimate element compounds to microorganisms, plants, and animals. Something (or, if you prefer, somebody) had to have made it happen.
Does a rock have a soul? Do humans, even? What is a soul?
There is considerable debate over what a “soul” is, or if they exist. For me, a soul is a sense of self, emotions, desires, feelings; A rock does not appear in any way to “experience” these things consciously. But humans certainly do, and most people would probably extend this to animals like dogs, cats, and horses. But what about insects? Plants? Viruses? Frankly, I don’t know. But I do believe that souls exist and humans have them.
Just because we can’t touch something or define it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Danger, for example, takes on many forms, and while we can define something as dangerous, still—different people will perceive danger in different ways. We will disagree with each other as to what is a danger, and some will say danger is present where others will say it’s not. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
That’s what I believe about the Most High. We will disagree about the role this largely unknown force plays in our lives, but that doesn’t negate its existence. I don’t know what form it takes, or how it works. But I can see the effects of its existence. And so I believe in God, though not in the same way as most.
