Eating dinner while flying (in the open air!)

dinnersky.jpgThere are some strange places you can have dinner, but this one takes the cake: you sit down to dinner while your table is picked up and carried over a city by a crane. You and up to 21 other people enjoy bird’s eye views of a Belgian or Netherlandish city. Heck, this makes dining at the top of a skyscraper look like nothing.

At the official website there is a picture section, where you can get a closer look at how this actually works. As you can fairly easily tell, the photo above is a Photoshop job—no one would dare stand up like those two guys are doing during something like this. However, the seats can rotate outward up to 90º in each direction.

The photos on the site show that each person is strapped in with a four-point belt restraint that comes over both shoulders. The seats really are out in the open air, so you’d better make sure you’re comfortable with your seat beforehand, cause you ain’t gonna change in midair!

I also notice that the participants are wearing headphones in some but not all of the pictures. It appears this is so that you can hear your host clearly as he tells you what you can and can’t do while filling your belly at 150 feet.

The going rate for one of these dinners? 7,900 €, or about $11,000—which is actually a lot less than I would have thought! Other things, like customization of the seats and table can add quite a bit onto that, though.

Let me guess…you want to see the official site, right? Go to it!

  2. Good point! I guess you want to go beforehand! I didn’t see anything on the site that added a cost for a bathroom to go with the flying table (there is a center area that the host stands on that might possibly accommodate one) but that might obstruct views of people sitting across from you as well, so I guess the best option is to make sure you are ready beforehand.

Oh yeah, by the way… you might also want to have a bottle of Purell or some other dry antibacterial formula handy.
