Buddhists in favor of military crackdown in Sri Lanka
There has been an ongoing battle in Sri Lanka between the LTTE (the “Tamil Tigers”) and the government. Apparently, the conflict has worn on for so long that even Buddhist organizations are calling for a military solution.
It is my hope that we who disagree can reach dialogue on the issues that matter most to us. I know comparatively little about the situation in Sri Lanka, but I know it’s definitely not a new thing. Please feel free to comment.

I came to know of your blog through Robert Salam’s blog and I am so excited as you are discussing a very forgotten topic, which is still alive in that area.
You know why the war in Srilanka is still not ending? because of the Indian support to Tamil Tigers.
Though, India is an archrival of Pakistan, and one may say that we are blaming India for Srilankan unrest, but honestly that is the ground reality. We know it and suffering from it in our province of Balochistan, where India is targeting Chinese nationals who are working on some construction projects.
regards.

Interesting response. Thank you for alerting me to this issue. It seems that on the road to becoming a regional [and possibly world] power, you must meddle in the affairs of many different countries. As Thomas Friedman put it, “for globalism to work, America can’t be afraid to act like the almighty superpower it is. The hidden hand of the market will never work without a hidden fist.”
What’s really alarming is the amount of tension in the South Asian region generally. Everyone talks about Iraq and Israel (and yes, Israel is a nuclear power), but very few people are looking at India-China-Pakistan, where about 40% of the world’s population lives and diplomatic relations ain’t lookin’ good. And in this part of the world, they’re all nuclear powers.
I believe this part of the world deserves not to be so forgotten about. I for one would like to have more insight into what motivates such conflict. What do you think is going to be the key to peaceful coexistence here?
Government crackdowns, even when they are a response to a real problem, don’t get at the meat of it. We have to get down to the most basic assumptions underlying the discord in the world today. Otherwise, even if we don’t bomb each other into radioactive isotopes, we still have no hope of working together when this planet’s resources run out.
